PROJECT OUTCOMES
GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) is the European Programme for the establishment of a European capacity for Earth Observation.

GMES encompasses six thematic areas: marine, land, atmosphere, emergency, security and climate change.

GMES is embedded in a philosophy that the application of Earth Observation (EO) for decision-making has to be driven by the user community, which hitherto has not been involved in the process of EO development.

The two main programmes that have supported the service developments have been:
·the European Space Agency (ESA) based GMES Service Elements (GSEs)
·the EU Framework Programme 7 (EU FP7)

European research and innovation efforts are set to receive a significant increase in funding with the announcement of the largest set of calls for proposals ever under the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). Worth a total of EUR 8.1 billion, projects funded by these calls are open to organisations and businesses in all EU Member States, FP7 partner states and specifically eligible countries

The project is followed up by the Research Executive Agency (REA). REA is a funding body created by the European Commission to foster excellence in research and innovation. It manages large parts of the Seventh Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration Activities (FP7), the main EU funding package to respond to Europe's needs in terms of jobs and competitiveness in the global knowledge economy.
