Consortium

The consortium consists in a highly qualified team. It is composed out of academic institutions, SME’s, NGO’s and governmental organizations. In this way it combines specific expertise in remote sensing with expertise of specialists in forests management in African countries. Additionally an advisory board will provide concrete advice to the consortium.

PROJECT OUTCOMES
The partners:

EUROSENSE ​(Belgium) is a prominent commercial and highly specialised remote sensing organization, existing since 1964. Besides a wide experience in many technical topics, EUROSENSE has built high credibility in the processing of satellite remote sensing data. The organization has extensive experience in the processing of a wide range of optical and radar space imagery or a combination of them. EUROSENSE is a Medium Enterprise, with strong management capacities (leading numerous of international consortia for a wide range of customers). (Leader WP1)

ITC (International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation – University of Twente) (The Netherlands), has almost 60 years of broad experience and a dedicated scientific staff with a diverse range of expertise. ITC is one of the world's foremost international professional education establishments in the field of geo-information science and earth observation. The research program of ITC develops cutting-edge knowledge and innovative approaches in geo-information science and earth observation for resource management and other applications. (Leader WP3)

IRD (Research Institute for Development) (France) is an excellent French research organization dedicated to development. Founded in 1944 , attached to the Ministries of Research and of Foreign Affairs, it is a non-profit government-funded public organization whose general missions are to conduct research and provide training and consultancy with a view to promote the economic, social and cultural development in the Southern countries. OSFAC (Observatoire Satellital des Forêts d‟Afrique Centrale) (Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)) was established in 2000 as the central node of the Central Africa regional GOFC-GOLD (Global Observation of Forest and Land Cover Dynamics) network. It is a legally recognized NGO (Kinshasa, 2005) in the DRC that operates with a regional mandate to promote the use of satellite data and products for the management of natural resources and sustainable development. (Leader WP’s 2 & 5)

CNIAF (National Centre for forest and Fauna Inventories and Management, Ministry of Forest Economy- Centre national d‟inventaire et d‟aménagement des resources forestières et fauniques) (Republic of Congo) is the cell in charge of Cartography and Geomatics at the Ministry of Forest Economy in Congo. This Centre has experience in the implementation of sustainable management plans. At the regional level, it represents Congo in the COMIFAC. At the National level, the Ministry is in charge of Forests, Environment, Agriculture and Town and country planning.

MEF (Ministère des Eaux et Forêts) (Gabon) is the geomatic unit of the DGEF (Direction Générale des Eaux et Forêts/Director General of Waters and Forests). Its main tasks are the sustainable management of forests and wildlife. While it wants to ensure reforestation, it also continues and intensifies the promotion of a modern timber industry with a high performance value.

Philippe Mayaux - Joint Research Center (JRC) is a thematic unit leader at the Institute for Environment and Sustainability of the JRC, Ispra, Italy.

Pierre Defourny - Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) has lead and managed forest assessment projects for 20 years, with a special focus on Central Africa.

Fred Stolle - World Resources Institute (WRI) has been working on forest governance, forest changes, and their impacts on climate change for over 10 years, especially in Southeast Asia.
