REDD in the Republic of Congo
Country description
Congo covers 342.815 km² and has an estimated population of 3.6 million, corresponding to a relatively low population density of 10.5 inhabitants per km². This population is mostly urban, with more than half of all Congolese living in the six largest cities.
Forests occupy a prominent place in the Congo, with area estimates ranging from 22.4 million hectares (CNIAF, 2008) to 25.9 million hectares. The most recent remote sensing based forest cover estimate is 18.5 million hectares. The Congolese forest covers two third of the Congolese territory.
Congo National REDD program
Republic of Congo has been chosen among the priority countries in Africa for technical and financial support of the UN-REDD Programme. Preparedness plan for REDD+ (R-PP) of the Republic of Congo, approved by the international community in June 2010, contains the main strategic, technical, financial and methodological recommended by the Congo for its preparation to the implementation of REDD. It covers the period from 2011 to 2013. The overall budget for its implementation is U.S. $ 15.5 million.
Republic of Congo plans the establishment of a MRV cell that will be hosted by CNIAF and may include staff of CERGEC. Under the tutelage Committee Strategic National REDD and the technical supervision of the National Coordination REDD+, its roles will be to schedule and conduct the System Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) and monitoring and quality control (QA / QC ) data. This cell will have the human and logistic resources to the effective conduct of MRV.
